No babies in arms. \n  \nBorn in 1936\, Ghanaian guitarist\, composer\, arranger\, bandleader\, and producer Ebo Taylor has been a vital presence in African music for more than half-a-century. During the early ’60s\, he was active in the influential highlife bands the Stargazers and the Broadway Dance Band whose singles were mainstays on national radio. In 1962 he took his Black Star Highlife Band to London and collaborated with other African musicians who were also in Britain at the time\, including Fela Kuti. Back in Ghana\, he worked as an influential producer\, crafting recordings for Pat Thomas (his future collaborator) and C.K. Mann\, among many others. During the ’70s\, his own musical projects combined traditional Ghanaian music with Afro-beat\, jazz\, and funk\, creating a trademark sound as evidenced by the albums Ebo Taylor & the Pelikans (1976) and Twer Nyame (1978). In the ’80s\, albums such as Conflict Nkru! and Hitsville Re-Visited (co-billed to Thomas) by his Uhuru-Yenzu band delivered a rawer\, more immediate sound. Over the next two decades\, Taylor was a noted producer\, arranger\, and composer\, working with Thomas\, Mann\,  Gyedu-Blay Ambolley \, Kofi Yankson\, and dozens of others. He returned to performing live in the early 21st century after hip-hop producers began sampling his work.  Soundways Records  released the compilation Ghana Special. In 2010\, Strut Records released Love and Death\, his first internationally distributed album\, followed by a series of catalog reissues and all-new recordings including 2018’s Yen Ara.

SUMMARY:BLACK AND LOUD MUSIC FEST
DESCRIPTION:BLACK & LOUD FEST IS A CELEBRATIONOF BLACK-FRONTED BANDS THATEVERYONE IS INVITED TO.\n\n\nCategorically\, through the entire history of music and American culture\, Black folks have not received proper love or credit\, and if they do it is not until decades after their passing. From Sister Rosetta Tharpe to Seattle’s Tina Bell to the contemporary pioneers Fishbone\, in the PNW\, Black-fronted bands have been in need of the proper support and recognition of the impact they’ve made on music history. After a music festival where they were the only Black bands on the bill\, King Youngblood’s Cameron Lavi-Jones and Down North’s Anthony Briscoe aligned to do something about this issue and assembled an incredible team of pros to create Black and Loud Fest. Backed with the support of title sponsor Jack Daniel’s\, this festival was born from the DIY spirit to give folks the chance to prevent history from repeating itself. Black and Loud Fest aims to celebrate these bands with folks from all walks of life by sharing experiences and insights about these issues\, giving the talented and underrepresented community of alternative Black artists their flowers\, and throwing one of the most kick-ass music festivals in the Pacific Northwest. Our goal is to honor the broad spectrum of Black creativity\, showcasing how integral these contributions have been to defining American music and culture at large. And guess what? \nNo matter who you are\, you’re invited. Let’s tear it up together.

SUMMARY:Preserve The Kulture Jam
DESCRIPTION:Preserve the Kulture Jam 24 is a two-day celebration of hip-hop culture at APEX Art & Culture Center\, Friday and Saturday\, Aug. 16-17! \nFRIDAY\, AUG. 16\nPTK kicks off Friday with a special movie screening of “Prophets\, Teachers and Kings\,” an award-winning film that’s an inside look at the dark and sometimes dangerous world of one of Los Angeles’ oldest graffiti crews\, and their 35-year rise from juvenile delinquency to urban art infamy. \nThere will be an exciting panel following the film with John Carswell\, collector of the DogTown Collection; Devin Rice\, movie director and cinematographer; AYE147\, renowned UTI graffiti writer and DogTown artist; Cornbread\, the Philadelphia graffiti legend credited as the world’s first graffiti artist; and Baby G Carswell\, AMGRAF curator. This is a not-to-be-missed event. \nAfter the panel there will be an unveiling of a special canvas painted by Cornbread\, as well as tours of the AMGRAF museum with Baby G. \nSATURDAY\, AUG. 17\nSaturday will be an action-packed day showcasing “the Kulture” of Hip Hop. \nThe morning begins with the start of the children’s mural project at the back wall of APEX. AYE147 and Cornbread will collaborate on this fun mural that will grace the wall for the year\, spreading a message of unity\, kindness and hope. \nWe will close Wetmore Avenue between Everett and 26th Street for a lowrider car show highlighting local clubs and the drivers’ ability to turn cars into not only pieces of art\, but also engineering feats with out-of-this-world hydraulics. \nThat afternoon\, 206 Zulu\, the Seattle-based community organization that uses Hip Hop culture and the arts as platforms for community service\, education and empowerment\, will host a Zulu Throwdown breakdancing workshop\, exhibition and break battle. \nWatch some of graffiti’s top national and regional artists compete in our annual paint battle; battling to be the best of their peers and crowd favorites. Meet the artists and watch their creativity flow from can to canvas. \nDJs will keep the vibe going\, Johnny Slaw’s will keep bellies full\, and our beer and wine garden will be sure to keep adult beverages flowing. \nPhoenix-based Herb ‘N Life will play Kings Hall at 8 p.m. Created in 2020\, this reggae rock band released their first album – The Blue Album – in October 2022. They hae a distinct sound and are sure to get showgoers dancing. \n*There will be a $10 cover charge to enter Kings Hall for the Saturday night show beginning at 8 p.m. The beer garden and food truck will be open throughout the event. \nSupported by Snohomish County and Everett LTAC grants\, this community event is partnering with 206 Zulu and The Schack Art Center and Schack’s Fresh Paint event. Paint\, paint and more paint. Watching graffiti artists create their works of art using only aerosol paint doesn’t get much fresher.\n\nLocation: APEX Everett\n1611 Everett Avenue\nEverett\, WA 98201 \nStay tuned for more updates!

SUMMARY:DO THE RIGHT THING 35TH ANNIVERSARY!
DESCRIPTION:Set on one block of Brooklyn’s Bed-Stuy Do or Die neighborhood\, at the height of summer\, this 1989 masterpiece by Spike Lee confirmed him as a writer and filmmaker of peerless vision and passionate social engagement. Over the course of a single day\, the easygoing interactions of a cast of unforgettable characters give way to heated confrontations as tensions rise along racial fault lines\, ultimately exploding into violence. Punctuated by the anthemic refrain of Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power\,” DO THE RIGHT THING is a landmark in American cinema\, as politically and emotionally charged and as relevant now as when it first hit the big screen.
