No babies in arms. \n  \nBorn in 1936\, Ghanaian guitarist\, composer\, arranger\, bandleader\, and producer Ebo Taylor has been a vital presence in African music for more than half-a-century. During the early ’60s\, he was active in the influential highlife bands the Stargazers and the Broadway Dance Band whose singles were mainstays on national radio. In 1962 he took his Black Star Highlife Band to London and collaborated with other African musicians who were also in Britain at the time\, including Fela Kuti. Back in Ghana\, he worked as an influential producer\, crafting recordings for Pat Thomas (his future collaborator) and C.K. Mann\, among many others. During the ’70s\, his own musical projects combined traditional Ghanaian music with Afro-beat\, jazz\, and funk\, creating a trademark sound as evidenced by the albums Ebo Taylor & the Pelikans (1976) and Twer Nyame (1978). In the ’80s\, albums such as Conflict Nkru! and Hitsville Re-Visited (co-billed to Thomas) by his Uhuru-Yenzu band delivered a rawer\, more immediate sound. Over the next two decades\, Taylor was a noted producer\, arranger\, and composer\, working with Thomas\, Mann\,  Gyedu-Blay Ambolley \, Kofi Yankson\, and dozens of others. He returned to performing live in the early 21st century after hip-hop producers began sampling his work.  Soundways Records  released the compilation Ghana Special. In 2010\, Strut Records released Love and Death\, his first internationally distributed album\, followed by a series of catalog reissues and all-new recordings including 2018’s Yen Ara.

SUMMARY:Digable Planets
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, December 30\, 2022\nDoors at 7:00 pm\nShow at 8:00 pm \nGeneral Admission\nAll Ages\, Bar with Valid ID \n$38.50 in advance\n$45.00 day of show\n(not including fees) \nSTG strongly encourages and recommends when attending a performance that you wear a mask. We reserve the right to require health and safety protocols for all performances. www.stgpresents.org/health \n\n\n\n\nSTG Presents Digable Planets at the Neptune Friday\, December 30\, 2022. \nDigable Planets burst onto the music scene in 1993 with their Grammy-winning single\, “Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)”. Made up of Ishmael Butler (Butterfly)\, Craig (C Know/ Doodlebug) Irving\, and Mary Ann (Ladybug Mecca) Vieira\, the trio carved out a unique style of jazz-informed Hip Hop. Shortly after\, Digable Planets followed up with their debut album\, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time And Space)\, an ambitious offering that Pitchfork praised as “a world within a world\, complete with its own language and monuments.” \nMelding Jazz samples\, and complex rhymes that touched on everything from the nuances of city life (“Where I’m From”) to abortion rights (“La Femme Fetal”)\, Reachin’ was a rich and vibrant artistic statement as well as a huge commercial success (RIAA certified gold). \nDigable Planets immediately followed up with Blowout Comb\, a bold and colorful meditation on Black liberation. While the album did not initially reach the immediate commercial successes of Reachin’\, the album has aged beautifully\, influencing future generations of Hip Hop heads\, young Jazz musicians and Afrofuturists. The trio spent the 2000s establishing their own individual creative voices with Butler’s Cherrywine and Shabazz Palaces projects\, Mecca’s work with BROOKZILL! and C Know leading Cee Knowledge & The Cosmic Funk Orchestra. \nIn 2015\, the group embarked upon a string of wildly successful live shows and has been very active as a tight touring unit ever since. In 2017\, they released Digable Planets Live\, a live album that showcases many gems from the group’s catalog as well as the trio’s skill at rocking the crowd with a live band. A pioneering act that continues to cast a considerable influence\, Digable Planets have left an indelible mark on music. Nearly 20 years after their debut\, their music still shines and the group continues to bring their celebrated stage show to excited crowds around the world.

SUMMARY:Antibalas
DESCRIPTION:STG Presents Antibalas at The Neptune on Thursday\, February 20\, 2020. \nOn sale Friday\, November 22nd at 9 am –> http://bit.ly/AntibalasSTG20 \nGeneral Admission\nAll Ages / Bar with I.D. \n$28.50 advance\n$33.50 day of show\n(not including fees) \n*Please note: show times that are listed in our Facebook events are approximate. Show could end earlier or later than the time that is listed.* \nIt’s hard to believe that more than twenty years have passed since Antibalas’s humble beginning as a neighborhood dance / protest band in the block parties and underground parties in pre-gentrified Williamsburg\, Brooklyn. Over the past two decades they have evolved into what The Guardian called “one of the world’s finest Afrobeat bands” while enjoying equal renown for their cross-genre collaborations with legends of popular music. With a heavy balance of experience and new blood\, the group leaps into 2020 with their new Daptone Records full-length “Fu Chronicles.” \nFounded in 1998 by saxophonist Martín Perna\, early incarnations of the group included several members of The Dap-Kings including bassist / producer Gabriel Roth\, guitarist Gabriel Roth\, keyboardist Victor Axelrod\, conguero Fernando “Bugaloo Velez\,” and trumpeter Anda Szilagyi. As the group expanded\, it absorbed younger musicians from the Daptone family including bassist Nick Movshon (El Michels\, Black Keys) and other musical natives and transplants from downtown Manhattan and North Brooklyn music scenes. \nIn 1999\, Perna and Roth dropped in at an atelier / dojo belonging to Duke Amayo. They invited him to a neighborhood concert and then reached out to him later as an emergency substitute for a show. Amayo soon became a fixture in the group\, first on percussion\, then later on vocals\, vibraphone\, and keyboards and moving to center stage as the group’s frontman and creating the Afro-Spot\, the band’s headquarters as well as the home of the first Daptone Records studio. \nOver the next few years\, the band performed several times a month throughout NYC at the Afro-Spot\, at benefits\, lofts\, block parties\, and at their Lower Manhattan weekly residency called “Africalia” with regular appearances by friends including Sharon Jones\, Lee Fields\, and The Sugarman Three. After their second release\, “Talkatif” (2002\, Ninja Tune)\, the group began touring heavily throughout North America and Europe including performances at Glastonbury\, Montreux Jazz Festival\, Coachella\, Bonnaroo\, and the Newport Jazz Festival. Over the years\, expanded their travels to Australia\, New Zealand\, Japan\, South America\, and most recently\, Hong Kong. \nIn the late 2000s\, after nearly ten years of road touring\, Antibalas was chosen by choreographer Bill T Jones\, to serve as the band for the Tony-award winning Broadway musical “Fela.” Around the same time\, the band began to draw the attention of the Roots. The two groups joined with Public Enemy to perform a live version of the entire “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back” at the 2009 Roots Picnic as well as the Red Bull Battle of the Bands\, as well as numerous guest appearances on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. \nAntibalas has also served as the house band for several star-studded tribute shows at Carnegie Hall and the Apollo Theater paying tribute to the music of Aretha Franklin\, David Byrne\, Paul Simon\, and Billie Holiday\, backing dozens including Allen Toussaint\, Cee Lo Green\, Sharon Jones\, Santigold\, and Angelique Kidjo. \nOver the years\, different members have traded production and composition duties from album to album. On the new album—“Fu Chronicles”—Amayo leads us through a thrilling sonic journey of kung fu meets Afrobeat\, weaving together the strands of Edo and Yoruba cultural memory from Nigeria with his training and study in Chinese martial arts. \nRecorded in the Summer of 2018\, over seventeen musicians and singers crammed into the storied Daptone House of Soul in Bushwick to record the massive body of work. With live versions and arrangements stretching up to thirty minutes\, Perna\, Amayo\, and Roth worked tirelessly to preserve the hypnotic power of the long-form live arrangements into six concise and powerful album tracks. \n“Fu Chronicles” will be the eighth studio album from Antibalas\, who have been releasing music over four decades; Liberation Afro Beat Vol. 1 (1999)\, Talkatif (2002)\, Who Is This America? (2004)\, Security (2007)\, Government Magic (2011)\, Antibalas (2012)\, Where the Gods are In Peace (2017)\, Fu Chronicles (2020). \nPhoto credit: Celine Pinget

SUMMARY:Oddisee & Evidence
DESCRIPTION:STG Presents Oddisee & Evidence (+Special Guests: Warm Brew) at The Neptune on October 9\, 2018. \nGeneral Admission\nAll Ages / Bar with I.D. \nTickets are $25.00 (not including fees). On sale now! –> bit.ly/2LfzXjS \nOddisee has released two studio albums\, several EPs\, mixtapes and instrumental albums\, and has over 23 million plays on Spotify. He’s been profiled by NPR\, the Washington Post\, praised by Pitchfork and Stereogum\, performed on NPR’s Tiny Desk\, Red Bull Sound Select and at festivals including Glastonbury and Sasquatch. ‘The Iceberg’ follows two releases in 2016\, the ‘Alwasta EP’ and the instrumentals album ‘The Odd Tape.’ His 2015 full-length ‘The Good Fight’ was a Top 10 album on the iTunes Hip-Hop/Rap chart and he won the iTunes Music award for Best Hip-Hop Album of 2012. \nEvidence\, born Michael Perretta\, never stops creating and he’s constantly perfecting his craft as an emcee\, producer\, photographer\, director\, and graffiti artist. He’s been a long a champion of hip-hop culture and advocate for the genre. \nEvidence’s affinity for hip-hop and the culture began in the early 1980s\, with his parents’ divorce and subsequent move from Santa Monica to neighboring Venice Beach. By the early 1990s\, he became a graffiti artist painting hip- hop inspired hieroglyphics under the name PW in a group named MSK. Soon after he moved next door to QD3\, son of producer Quincy Jones\, Evidence started rapping. QD3\, an accomplished West Coast producer\, became one of Evidence’s major influences in his pursuit to create music. \nFrom there\, Evidence teamed with the likeminded Rakaa to form the group Dilated Peoples and after the success of their 1997 single “Third Degree” b/w “Confidence” and “Global Dynamics” on ABB Records – and the addition of DJ Babu to the fold a year later – the group quickly became a fixture on the hip hop tour circuit. As a collective\, Dilated Peoples have toured the world and over a million albums\, earning them a place in the hip-hop history books. \nEvidence is also an accomplished producer and had his production work-featured on tracks for the Beastie Boys\, Linkin Park\, Swollen Members\, Defari\, Planet Asia and co- production on Kanye West’s debut album “College Dropout” which earned him a Grammy. \nEvidence has released a pair of solo albums in the “The Weatherman LP” and “Cats & Dogs”. As a solo artist he’s collaborated with Aloe Blacc\, Raekwon\, Slug\, and Prodigy\, and had production from the Alchemist\, DJ Premier\, DJ Babu\, and others. Evidence’s last solo release debuted within the Top 10 of the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums\, Independent Albums and Rap Albums charts while also reaching #64 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. \nIn 2014\, Evidence formed the group Step Brothers with fellow producer/rapper the Alchemist and unleashed their debut album “Lord Steppington”. The quickly hit the road and began touring across America\, Europe\, and around the globe playing to sold-out shows. The album garnered critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork\, XXL\, All Music Guide\, HipHopDX\, and was named one of the “40 Best Rap Albums of 2014” by Rolling Stone. \nDilated Peoples returned with their highly anticipated new album “Directors of Photography” on the Rhymesayers and cracked the Billboard Top 200 at #41 and debuted in the Top 10 on both the Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top Independent Albums charts. \nEvidence is currently working on his third solo album for release in late 2015 on Rhymesayers.
